In celebration of their 55th anniversary, Nam Hwa Opera presented 《情断昆吾剑》, or The Severing Sword on 15 to 17 March 2019 at the Victoria Theatre. Based on a popular wu xia story, 《还剑奇情录》The Severing Sword was adapted into a Teochew opera performance aimed at fostering interest and awareness of the beauty and versatility of Teochew opera to the contemporary audience.

The story centres on Yun Wu Yang and his obsession with the legendary Kun Wu sword which promises its bearer power beyond imagination. His desire to pursue and possess the sword resulted in family ties severed and love torn apart. While not explicitly represented in the key visual, the presence of the Kun Wu sword is implied through the manipulation of the Chinese typography in the title design. Its placement within the key visual also implies the central role it played amongst the characters of the story. Apart from re-emphasising the idea of the sword, the use of a metallic silver ink used in the background also serves to give the overall look-and-feel a more contemporary one.
