The Necessary Stage presented Civilised, an interactive theatre production, written by Haresh Sharma and directed by Alvin Tan, that responded to the year-long national commemoration of 200 years since Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles arrived on Singapore.

The piece—rambunctious, irreverent yet surprisingly meditative—pushed its audiences to consider and ruminate upon the idea of colonialisation, not just in Singapore, but, across multiple times and spaces. Through an array of skits where the actors masterfully slips in and out of various characters of different epoch, grand endeavours and passionate ambition give way to reveal the underlying greed.

The art direction for the promotional materials plays on this very fundamental human greed that drives the characters by visualising the idea of land grabbing; land being constantly taken over by different groups of people since more land is equal to more power and resources.

Messy, scattered pieces of maps and paper strewn around as graphic elements, emphasising on the confusion and chaos amidst the frequent changes of hands which results everyone staking claim on the land. The characters breaking out within the mess of papers and maps are arranged in formations that are reminiscent of classical Western art paintings, emphasising on the dominant and interventional part that Europeans had played in colonialism in many parts of the world, and its lasting legacy.

Civilised was performed on 15–26 May 2019 at The Necessary Stage Black Box, by Edith Podesta, Ghafir Akbar, Koh Wan Ching, Lian Sutton and Siti Khalijah Zainal.
