The M1 Chinese Theatre Festival, started by the Theatre Practice in 2011, aimed to introduce both quality Chinese-language local and international productions to Singaporeans in a black box setting that filled the gap of black box programmes for the children that engaged with topics that were broad and deep.
In the 2017 edition, the Festival focused on the social and emotional struggles, particularly in relation to social class, sickness and death, social labels and stereotypes. The centrepiece of the Festival was a multi-disciplinary piece, Blank Run, visualising the memory of a sexual assault victim and the impact of the traumatic experiences.
Reprising the tree motif which was now familiar to the audiences of the Festival, we adapted it into the Tree of Life motif to encapsulate the binary themes explored in the programming of the Festival as well as create a division between the programmes that were targeted to the adults and children. The illustration style and colour palette for each side—one side, featuring photo images collaged into the illustration and a jewel-tone colour scheme; the other side, featuring simple illustrations with a pastel colour palette—corresponded accordingly.
