Mobile Museum

NUS Museum and NUS Centre for the Arts

2017

NUS Museum is a treasure trove of precious objects nestled within the compounds of the National University of Singapore (NUS). It was first established as the University of Malaya Art Museum in 1955 under the directorship of the esteemed Michael Sullivan. It was pivotal in the development of the study of Art History and served as a prototype for the museum institution in Singapore.

With the intent of bring the Museum’s rich content to the wider NUS community amidst the sprawling NUS campus of today, we were asked to design an exhibition structure that could be mobile, modular, able to change its content easily and easily packed for storage.

Taking reference from the modernist’s perspective of universality, the team approached the design of the structures through the use of fundamental geometric shapes and forms. While it serves as functional scaffold for the structures’ form and has a universal aesthetic appeal, it also to conceptually communicate that art objects are really how basic shapes put together to convey meaning, emotions and beauty. Once simplified into its fundamental elements of visual art, the pieces could then be demystified, and therefor, appreciated.

The logotype and secondary graphics created for any exhibitions for the mobile museum also draws references from this same central idea. The three-dimensionality of the logotype mirrors the demarcated space that the mobile museum structures create within a public space.

The mobile museum was first launched on 4 February 2017 at the Stephen Riady Centre, with the exhibition entitled ‘The War & Beyond: The Dato N. The Dato’ N. Parameswaran Collection of Prints and Drawings from the Vietnam War’.
